MEDIEVAL ROOF FINIAL FROM THE KENNET

MEDIEVAL ROOF FINIAL FROM THE KENNET

Finials like this stood on the roof of a medieval house to channel out the smoke from the central fire in the hall. The inside of this one has not been blackened by smoke, so it was probably never used, perhaps because it was a "second".

It was found in 1880 by the River Kennet when the Reading Gas Works were being built.

Museum object no. 1969.12.1. (Watercolour of the finial by Joseph Stevens).
