VOUSSOIR ARCH-STONE FROM READING ABBEY

This sculptured stone comes from Reading Abbey. It was carved around 1125 and is a voussoir stone from the arches of the Abbey cloister. On one side is carved the head of a savage bird with almond shaped eyes and a long beak gripping a decorative moulding. The underside is decorated with overlapping rings and floral motifs.
