Cast iron fire backs were devised to protect the brick wall at the back of a fire place. Without this protection the wall would have to be refaced from time to time. They were introduced in the 16th century. Most surviving examples date from the 17th century when they were most frequently in use. With the introduction of fire grates in the 18th century the need for a fire back declined.
